Round 1: Mono Vampire takes a leadership position

The Regular Season in ASEAN League just started. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Thailand Mono Vampire smashed Filipino Alab Pilipinas in Bangkok 111-76. Mono Vampire shot the lights out from three sinking 18 long-distance shots on high 56.3 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American forward Michael Singletary (198-88, college: Texas Tech) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and his fellow American import power forward Ryan Watkins (206-91, college: Boise St., agency: Two Points) chipped in 13 points and 13 rebounds. At the losing side American forward Nick King (201-95, college: MTSU) responded with 21 points and 7 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Alab Pilipinas will play next round against Zhuhai trying to get back on the winning streak. Mono Vampire will try to continue on its current victory against WM Dragons in Kuala Lumpur.
Zhuhai (0-1) recorded a loss at the home court. Hosts were defeated by Macau (1-1) 117-100. American swingman Kenny Manigault (196-91, college: Pikeville) nailed a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws) for the winning side and Mikh McKinney accounted for 23 points, 9 rebounds and 12 assists. Center Chen Cai (205-93) came up with a double-double by scoring 32 points and 10 rebounds for Zhuhai in the defeat. Macau will play against Formosa D. (#8) in Changhua City in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Zhuhai will play at home against Alab Pilipinas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of Taiwanese Formosa D. (0-1) against Thailand Mono Vampire (2-0) on Saturday night. Visiting Formosa D. was defeated by Mono Vampire in a tough game in Bangkok 90-95. Michael Singletary fired a double-double by scoring 22 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Mono Vampire's coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Jerran Young produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 18 rebounds for lost side. Mono Vampire will meet at home WM Dragons in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Formosa D. will play against Macau (#3) and hope to win that game.
The game between Top Four teams took place in . Taiwanese host Fubon Braves (1-1) were edged by Malaysian WM Dragons (1-0) 91-90. Worth to mention a great performance of Will Artino who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 25 points and 20 rebounds. Fubon Braves' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. WM Dragons' next round opponent will be Mono Vampire in Bangkok and it will be for sure the game of the week. Fubon Braves will play at home against Hong Kong ELL and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 1 Macau lost to Fubon Braves on the opponent's court 91-95.



Zhuhai - Macau 100-117

Zhuhai (0-1) recorded a loss at the home court. Hosts were defeated by Macau (1-1) 117-100. They made 16-of-18 charity shots (88.9 percent) during the game. Macau players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. American swingman Kenny Manigault (196-91, college: Pikeville) nailed a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws) for the winning side and American-Filipino guard Mikh McKinney (184-92, college: Sacramento St.) accounted for 23 points, 9 rebounds and 12 assists. Center Chen Cai (205-93) came up with a double-double by scoring 32 points and 10 rebounds and American guard Douglas Herring Jr. (191-87, college: Utica) added 19 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists respectively for Zhuhai in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Macau will play against Formosa D. (#8) in Changhua City in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Zhuhai will play at home against Alab Pilipinas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Very expected game when Chinese Macau (1-1) was defeated on the road by Taiwanese Fubon Braves (1-1) 95-91. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. 24 personal fouls committed by Macau helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a very good performance for Costa Rican-Belizean forward Charles Garcia (208-88, college: Seattle) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Chih-Chieh Lin (192-82) contributed with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Fubon Braves' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American swingman Kenny Manigault (196-91, college: Pikeville) answered with 31 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import forward Brandon Edwards (198-91, college: UT Arlington) added 18 points and 20 rebounds in the effort for Macau. Five Fubon Braves and four Macau players scored in double figures. Fubon Braves' next round opponent will be Hong Kong ELL (#5) at home.
